2014 NFL Mock Draft

So I understand that I haven’t posted in almost an entire year. I just wanted to get my mock draft out there so no one can all me a liar when I go 32/32. Here we go!

 

1) Texans – Jadeveon Clowney – DE – South Carolina: I just think this guy has too potential to be passed up. I think the Texans could go QB if there is one they really like. They could also trade down and still get the QB they like. Since I can’t predict trades I’m just going with the best overall player in Clowney.

2) Rams – Sammy Watkins – WR – Clemson: In a draft that is very deep in WR, Watkins has separated himself as the guy. The Rams have two picks in the first round. I believe they go with another play-maker to help strengthen the offense they already have. Watkins and Tavon Austin could be a mean 1-2 punch for QB Sam Bradford.

3) Jaguars – Blake Bortles – QB – Central Florida: The Jaguars can’t afford to miss at this pick if they go for a QB. Blaine Gabbert wasn’t the answer to their problem the last time around. Bortles is from the area having played for Central Florida and just maybe the best QB in the draft. I don’t think anyone can say that yet but I believe he is the best in my opinion.

4) Browns – Greg Robinson – OT – Auburn: The Browns also may choose to go QB. Lucky for them they have 2 picks in the first round. The bad thing is that if they don’t go QB in the first pick they may miss out and have to go into the second for their QB. Too bad they don’t have Kevin Costner drafting for them here. I think they go safe pick and take the best OL in the draft.

5) Raiders – Johnny Manziel – QB – Texas A&M: Here he is folks! Johnny Football to the Raiders! Do I believe he is the best option for them? No, but with Matt Schaub now in Oakland, Manziel can sit for a few weeks until Schaub gets injured and he gets his chance to shine. It will be fun to watch him in Silver and Black that’s for sure.

6) Falcons – Jake Matthews – OT – Texas A&M: The Falcons can still be one of the best teams with little change. Matt Ryan is still a top QB and just needs to stay healthy. Jake Matthews is a great addition to any offensive line. This is a top need and they get a darn good one in Matthews.

7) Buccaneers – Aaron Donald – DT – Pittsburgh: Araron Donald I a very good player. Easily the second best DL in the draft. I feel he kind of falls under the radar but the Buccs will get a nice anchor to their DL if the grab Donald at 7.

8) Vikings – Teddy Bridgewater – QB – Louisville: Ever since last season some have seen Bridgewater as the best QB in the draft. Lately it seems that people have questions about if he can be the face of the franchise. I think Bortles is best QB in draft 5 years from now but Bridgewater is best QB in draft now. Vikings don’t want to rebuild they just want to regroup. Bridgewater is their best chance to get that done.

9) Bills – Khalil Mack – OLB – Buffalo: This maybe the biggest steal in the draft. Mack is an elite player. He graduated from Buffalo an will get to continue his career in Buffalo. The Bills have several needs but going best available will be a huge win for them. *Prediction: Mack wins Defensive Rookie of the Year!

10) Lions – Justin Gilbert – CB – Oklahoma St: As a Titans fan this is the player we need. Too bad for us the Lions also need him. If I’m the Titans I would try and trade up to get Gilbert. He is a great playmaking corner that is the best in the draft.

11) Titans – Anthony Barr – OLB – UCLA: If the Titans don’t trade up for Gilbert then I just hope they don’t go QB route. Their defense needs a lot of work. Barr would be the perfect fit in the new 3-4 defense.

12) Giants – Ha Ha Clinton-Dix – S – Alabama: The Gmen need help in a lot of areas. The secondary need depth and someone who can play right away. Ha Ha is the man from Alabama who can flat out play. Nice pick up here.

13) Rams – Taylor Lewan – OT – Michigan: The Rams got a playmaker with the first pick. Now they go with someone to protect Bradford. Rams are on the rise and Jeff Fisher will get them in the playoffs soon.

14) Bears – Calvin Pryor – FS – Louisville: Not sure what the Bears need but in the Packers and Lions division they better boost up their secondary.

15) Steelers – Darqueze Dennard – CB – Michigan St: A lot of buzz is building over this CB. He could be the first one off the board. It all comes down to team preference.

16) Cowboys – Kony Ealy – DE – Missouri: Cowboys need defensive help. Ealy could be special in a standup OLB/DE spot.

17) Ravens – Zack Martin – OT – Notre Dame: Michael Oher is in Tennessee so they better find his replacement quick. Martin will fit nicely in a very solid core group.

18) Jets – Mike Evans – WR – Texas A&M: Evans might turn out to be the best WR in a deep deep WR draft. Jets get another weapon to go along with whichever QB they decide to start.

19) Dolphins – Tre Mason – RB – Auburn: Mason is a special player. He can do so much and the Dolphins need a pick me up on the offensive side of the ball. Mason will be a Special Teams and offensive stand out.

20) Cardinals – Derek Carr – QB – Fresno St: I think Carr has a lot of upside but will need room to grow. The Cardinals had success with Carson Palmer last year. Palmer could help mold Carr into very good pro before he retires

21) Packers – Eric Ebron – TE – North Carolina: This is probably super late for this good of a TE. I could just never figure out how or when he would be picked. Super steal at 21 to the Packers.

22) Eagles – CJ Mosley – LB – Alabama: I like Mosley a lot! If the Titans would trade back I’d love to take him. He is very physical and even better awareness. Alabama players always seem to pan out. Great pick for whoever snags him.

23) Chiefs – Marqise Lee – WR – USC: The Chiefs started to turn things around last year. Bowed is still their top target with little else around him. Lee would be a great fit around Alex Smith and the offense.

24) Bengals – Kyle Fuller – CB – Virginia Tech: Another top CB in the draft. Bengals keep progressing in the right direction and seem on the cusp of a Super Bowl. Lock down corners are hard to come by and there are several in this years draft.

25) Chargers – Ryan Shazier – LB – Ohio St: This guy has really climbed up the boards. In a Chargers defense with other great young talent he could be a valuable addition and even challenge for defensive ROY.

26) Browns – Carlos Hyde – RB – Ohio St: The Browns need a QB but I don’t know who they value after Johnny Football. They also need a new RB. Hyde in my opinion is best back in the draft. He could be a nice fit and the Browns could still get their guy in the second round.

27) Saints – Odell Beckham Jr – WR – LSU: Beckham is local and very good. I see him slipping a little in order to land here. The Saints need more weapons for Brees to count on. This also gives them someone to lean on after Jimmy Graham moves on.

28) Panthers – Bradley Roby – CB – Ohio St: This years corners are the best I’ve seen in a long while. Roby is just the next one to go off the board in a very talented group.

29) Patriots – Stephon Tuitt – DE – Notre Dame: Don’t be surprised if the Patriots trade out of the first round. Since I don’t predict trades I just went with best available at a team need.

30) 49ers – Marcus Martin – C – USC: I wasn’t sure about this pick. There is usually a lineman that surprises everyone. Martin is very good and I like him a lot. It makes sense that he fits with the 49ers.

31) Broncos – Dee Ford – DE – Auburn: The last picks in the draft are usually tough to predict. Ford could go sooner or later than this pick. Hopefully the Broncos like him enough to pick him here.

32) Seahawks – Xavier Su’a-Filo – OG – UCLA: Last year there were two outstanding guards. This year there is one and he slips all the way to 32. Good new for him is that he will start for the defending champs.

That’s how I see the first round panning out. I’m hoping to increase my pick correctness to about 8/32 but always strive for 32/32. Best I luck.

Final Mock Draft 2013

Here is my final Mock draft the day of the NFL Draft. You can never tell what will happen on draft day but here are my predictions:

1) Kansas City Chiefs – Luke Joeckel – OT – Texas A&M: I think it is clear KC needs OL help. I have Joeckel as the best but some may think Eric Fisher is top. Joeckel will help protect Alex Smith from taking so many hits.

2) Jacksonville Jaguars – DIon Jordan – DE – Oregon: This pick has me scrambling. I have no clue what they will do. They need a QB but if they take one here I’d be shocked. Look for Fisher to be an option here too. I think they need a pass rusher and Jordan looks like the best in this class.

3) Oakland Raiders – Sharrif Floyd – DT – Florida: Oakland can do several things with this pick but I see them going with the best DL in the draft. Floyd can be a game changer for a defensive front 7.

4) Philadelphia Eagles – Eric Fisher – OT – Central Michigan: Some have the Eagles taking Geno Smith but I see them taking their licks this year and reevaluating the QB position next year.

5) Detroit Lions – Ezekiel Ansah – DE – BYU: Ansah has been rocking up the boards. I don’t know if this is their biggest need but drafting off value never hurts.

6) Cleveland Browns – Geno Smith – QB – West Virginia: The Browns’ GM has made it clear that they have yet to find their long term QB the last two years. If they like Smith enough he could become that player.

7) Arizona Cardinals – Lane Johnson – OT – Oklahoma: With their QB position becoming more clear they will take Johnson in order to protect Palmer.

8) Buffalo Bills – Ryan Nassib – QB – Syracuse: I think this is a no brainer. Nassib will be a Bill. If he goes 8 will be the question. Do they trade back and risk losing him? Or do they pull the trigger despite what the experts believe

9) New York Jets – Barkevious Mingo – DE – LSU: Mingo is a great athlete. He has killer potential. The Jets maybe taking a risk but he is a true NFL talent.

10) Tennessee Titans – Chance Warmack – OG – Alabama: The Titans need OL help bad to help their run game and to keep Locker off the ground. If Locker is going to be the answer at QB then he must stay healthy. Warmack can help all around and start day one.

11) San Diego Chargers: Star Lotulelei – DT – Utah: Star is a freak. Demands a double team almost every snap. He really is a top 5 talent but falls to a very happy Chargers.

12) Miami Dolphins – Dee Milliner – CB – Alabama: Milliner has slipped a bit but still is the best DB in the draft. Answers the number one need for the Dolphins and starts day one.

13) New York Jets – Jonathan Cooper – OG – UNC: Along with Warmack these two make the best two guard prospects in years. Cooper could even go first if a teams prefers him over Warmack.

14) Carolina Panthers – Sheldon RIchardson – DT – Missouri: The Panthers need to get better pressure on the QBs in the division. RIchardson has climbed list and looks like a perfect fit in Carolina.

15) New Orleans Saints – Jarvis Jones – OLB – Georgia: The Saints are switching to the 3-4. That means they need pass rushing OLBs. Jarvis Jones maybe the best player in thee draft. This isa match made in heaven.

16) St. Louis Rams – Tavon Austin – WR – West Virginia: The Rams must get Sam Bradford some weapons. Austin is a rare talent like Percy Harvin. He will help in all aspects of the game.

17) Pittsburgh Steelers – Eddy Lacy – RB – Alabama: The Steelers used to pride themselves on a tough run game. In recent years they lost that aspect. Lacy could solve that right away.

18) Dallas Cowboys – Kenny Vaccaro – S – Texas: For the past several years the safety position has been a death trap. Hopefully home grown talent like Vaccaro can solve that.

19) New York Giants – D.J. Fluker – OT- Alabama: This is a clear need and Fluker is best available.

20) Chicago Bears – Tyler Eifert – TE – Notre Dame: Eifert is a rare talent. He has ball skills like a WR and would easily become Cutlers favorite target.

21) Cincinnati Bengals – Alec Ogletree – LB – Georgia: Olgletree is a rare talent with off field issues. That has never stopped the Bengals before.

22) St. Louis Rams – Cordarrelle Patterson – WR – Tennessee: I know they already took a WR but Patterson is a different type. If you need a passing game and can get the best two in the draft why not do it? Austin on the inside with Patterson on the outside could vault the Rams into contenders.

23) Minnesota Vikings – Manti Te’o – LB – Notre Dame: The Vikings GM made it clear he like Te’o and thinks he is much better than people think. He maybe slow but has an ability to find the football. Good fit in Minnesota.

24) Indianapolis Colts – Xavier Rhodes – CB – Florida St.: Rhodes is a big tall CB. That is the new model some teams are going these days. I think he fits in nicely with the Colts.

25) Minnesota Vikings – Keenan Allen – WR – Cal: They traded their best WR and Allen would fit their system nicely.

26) Green Bay Packers – Menelik Watson – OT – Florida St.: Biggest Need, Best Available. Watson fills the big need. Great on pass protection.

27) Houston Texans – Justin Hunter – WR – Tennessee: Andre Johnson is getting older and they need to get a star WR to help him. Hunter is a great athlete who could complement Johnson and take over when the time comes.

28) Denver Broncos – Datone Jones – DL – UCLA: Jones can play several positions on the DL and the Broncos need help at those positions.

29) New England Patriots – Desmond Trufant – CB – Washington: Trufant is the type of player the Patriots like to build around.

30) Atlanta Falcons – Jamar Taylor – CB – Boise St.: They need DBs and Taylor would be best around.

31) San Francisco 49ers – Johnathan Cyprien – S – FIU: Cyprien opened a lot of eyes at Senior Bowl. He is a good talent and help fix the worst position on the great defense.

32) Baltimore Ravens – Kevin Minter – LB – LSU: Ray Lewis is long gone. They would love for Te’o to fall here but some think Minter will be better anyway.

That is how I see the first round. Trades will happen and some players will fall while others surprise. Its always a fun night on Draft Night.

2013 NFL Mock Draft 2.0

I’ve spent some time revising my Mock Draft. There are a few changes with 1 major change. I went ahead and put a QB in the first round. I don’t think there is a QB that should be picked in the first round but all reports point to at least one QB being taken and possibly two. Here is my mock draft with previous pick listed as well. Five new names crack the first round with 5 exiting after the combine.

Luke Joeckel – OT – Texas A&M

1) Kansas City Chiefs – Luke Joeckel – OT – Texas A&M: The Chiefs got their QB in Alex Smith and franchised OT Brandon Albert. Some feel that opens then up to select a defensive lineman with the first pick. I say they take another OT because you need two and most times players leave the year after they are franchised. Joekel is my top OT and should be a good one for several years. I see the Chiefs going with DT in the secound round with the possibility that Brandon Williams out of Missouri Southern or Sheldon Richardson from Missouri falling to then in the second round. Previous pick: Star Lotulelei – DT – Utah.

2) Jacksonville Jaguars – Bjoern Werner – DE – Florida St.: I’ve said all along that Warner is my favorite DE in the draft. He is a true 4-3 DE and wouldn’t really fit in a 3-4 scheme. Jacksonville needs a lot of help in several places including QB but they missed on Blaine Gabbert and hope that maybe him or Chad Henne can establish themselves. If not look for them to hold a top pick again next year to try and land a new franchise QB. Previous pick: Damontre Moore – DE – Texas A&M

3) Oakland Raiders – Sharrif Floyd – DT – Florida: Floyd had a great combine and really improved his stock a lot. In my mock he moved from 15 to 3. The Raiders are one of those teams that could be in line for a QB. I almost had them taking Geno SMith but decided that with Palmer returning they could wait and take a QB in the second or third round. Floyd is a force up the middle and will really improve the Raiders defensive front. Previous Pick: Dee Milliner – CB – Alabama.

4) Philadelphia Eagles – Eric Fisher – OT – Central Michigan: I don’t really know what the Eagles will go for now that they have a new head coach. I think Fisher is a top OT and projects well at the left or right tackle. If Michael Vick is going to be successful or even Nick Foles then they need to stay healthy and standing upright. Fisher can help them do that. If Vick is starting Fisher can play right tackle and if Foles is starting then he can move to the left. This will give them a little versatility on the offensive line. Previous Pick: Jarvis Jones – LB – Georgia.

5) Detroit Lions – Dee Milliner  – CB – Alabama: Milliner is easily the best CB in the draft. The Lions have a good offense and defensive line but where they get in trouble is in the secondary. If they could get a lock down corner in Milliner then they could battle for a division title and get out of the cellar in the division. Previous Pick: Bjoern Warner – DE – FLorida St.

6) Cleveland Browns – Barkevious Mingo – DE/OLB – LSU: The Browns need help on the defensive side of the ball as they have found their QB & RB in Brandon Weeden and Trent Richardson. They need a DE and OLB, so why not draft a player that could play either position in MIngo. Mingo had a great combine and seems to be bulking up for the NFL. Truly a senior year at LSU could have helped him but he still grades out to be a good NFL player.  Previous Pick: No Change.

Geno Smith – QB – West Virginia

7) Arizona Cardinals – Geno Smith – QB – West Virginia: I don’t think the Cardinals should take Smith here. I think if he falls past Arizona then he may fall out of the first round even though a team could trade back in to get him. A good idea would be to trade back to Tennessee at ten. If the Bills or Jets take Smith then trade back to 15 with the Saints and take Barkley. If they don’t take him then you get another draft pick. Smith just doesn’t seem like a great NFL QB after seeing how he finished the year in West Virginia. Previous Pick: Luke Joeckel – OT – Texas A&M.

8) Buffalo Bills – Jarvis Jones – OLB – Georgia: I still think Jones is one of the top players in the draft. He is very skilled and plays well on the big stages. All around great LB. The Bills could take him and be set for years at LB.If Geno isn’t taken by the Cardinals then I’m sorry Bills fans he’s probably yours. Previous Pick: Alec Olgletree – LB – Georgia.

9) New York Jets – Dion Jordan – DE/OLB – Oregon: Jordan along with Mingo really improved their draft grade by showing people at the combine that the could play some 3-4 OLB as well as 4-3 DE. The Jets maybe the one orginazation that I have no Idea what they will do. They need a QB upgrade…oh wait they got it in David Garrard….but with Mark Sanchez owed a ton of money it won’t come via the draft. Jordan is best player on my board so they take him. Previous Pick: Kenny Vaccaro – S – Texas.

10) Tennessee Titans – Chance Warmack – OG: As a Titans fan I know who I want and its Warmack. He really could go as high as 4 but I have him falling only so we can get him. I hope this is the case because the Titans OL must be better if Chris Johnson, Jake Locker, and the entire skills team can put up points for us to compete. I think our first two picks in the draft will be OL from Alabama with Barrett Jones coming in the second round. Previous Pick: No Change.

11) San Diego Cargers – Tavon Austin – WR – West Virginia: The Chargers have a top QB in Rivers. The only problem is all his weapons are gone. Jackson, Sproles, Tomlinson, all gone. He still has Antonio Gates but he is an aging injury prone TE. I think Austin would be a perfect fit in San Diego. Cordarrelle Patterson could also be a nice fit. It just depends on who they like better. Previous Pick: Eric Fisher – OT – Central Michigan.

Cordarrelle Patterson – WR – Tennessee

12) Miami Dolphins – Cordarrelle Patterson – WR – Tennessee: I thin Patterson is best all around WR and that is what the Dolphins need. They seem to have their QB in Matt Moore and adding another weapon can only help in their goals in winning the AFC East.They do have other questions that need to be answered and after resigning Hartline they may want to go in another direction. Previous Pick: No Change.

13) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Kenny Vaccaro – S – Texas: Not really sure what the Buccs will focus on in the draft but I think Vaccaro is a top ten talent. I think he can impact any defense early and often. Tampa has a history of physical defenses and Vaccaro fit into that mold. This could be a pick that is traded as I don’t know their over all needs or game plan. Previous Pick: Dion Jordan – DE – Oregon.

14) Carolina Panthers – Jonathan Cooper – OG – North Carolina: Cam Newton isn’t going anywhere and they have good receivers and running backs. A tight end could come into play here but I think the biggest need on the offensive side of the ball is OL. Cooper is best OL on the board. If tackle is more needed than Lane Johnson may go here. I like Cooper and if Warmack goes earlier than 10 then Cooper will be a Titan. Previous Pick: Sheldon Richardson – DT – Missouri.

15) New Orleans Saints – Star Lotulelei – DT – Utah: If this happens then the Saints will be the happiest team in the NFL. Star is a top 5 talent. At the combine they found some heart defect and he is now under tremendous study. If everything comes out okay then he may still go number 1. I think this maybe enough to have him slip and the Saints take him to make an easy transition to the 3-4 defense.Previous Pick: Sharrif Floyd – DT – Florida.

Eddie Lacy – RB – Alabama

16) St. Louis Rams – Eddie Lacy – RB – Alabama: Steven Jackson is leaving and they need a front line runner. Lacy is clearly the best RB in the draft and maybe only one that goes round one. The Rams have two first round picks and I see them using both to improve their offense so they can keep up with the 49ers and Seahawks. Lacy is a perfect fit in my opinion. Previous Pick: No Change.

17) Pittsburgh Steelers – Lane Johnson – OT – Oklahoma: The Steelers are trying to get back to being one of those top teams. Lately the Bengals have passed the by and the Ravens are still in front. Last year their OL was really banged up and in order to boost they OL play and depth Johnson is a perfect fit. A big physical lineman goes a long way in the NFL. Previous Pick: Manti Te’o – LB – Notre Dame.

18) Dallas Cowboys – Sylvester Williams – DT – North Carolina: The Cowboys really need OL help but with Johnson coming off the board in front of them and D.J. Fluker being next best O-lineman they may elect to do with value over need and take Williams at DT. This fills another need and they can get OL help in second round. Williams is a good player and could really help the Cowboys up front. Previous Pick: Jonathan Cooper  – OG – North Carolina.

Tyler Eifert – TE – Notre Dame

19) New York Giants – D.J. Fluker – OT – Alabama: The Giants biggest needs are OT, OG, S, and RB. I don;t think any S of RB is good enough to be taken at 19. Therefore they go ahead and take Fluker even though it may not be the best value for their buck. FLuker does know how to block well and was a part of one of the best line in the country. He should help the Giants running game. Previous Pick: Lane Johnson – OT – Oklahoma.

20) Chicago Bears – Tyler Eifert – TE – Notre Dame: The Bears have Cutler and finally got him a deep threat in Marshall. Now he needs an intermediate threat at can make plays. A TE in the NFL has become a super important part of almost every offense. Look at the teams in the Playoffs, all have great TE play. I grade Eifert slightly better than Ertz but either could be taken here. Just depends on who the Bears like. Previous Pick: No Change.

21) Cincinnati Bengals – Justin Hunter – WR – Tennessee: Can you imagine HUnter across from A.J. Green!? What a powerful twosome that could be. Might even be like Carter and Moss back in the Vikings days. If they don’t go WR then OT Pugh from Syracuse or S Matt Elam from Florida could be options. Elam is good but his size worries me. Previous Pick: Matt Elam – S – Florida.

22) St. Louis Rams – Justin Pugh – OT – Syracuse: pugh is the last OL that I see being first round worthy. He had a solid career at Syracuse and grades well as a RT. In a few seasons he maybe able to move to LT in the NFL. The Rams continue ro rebuild their offense to Jeff Fisher’s liking. Previous Pick: D.J. Fluker – OT – Alabama.

23) Minnesota Vikings – Alec Ogletree – LB – Georgia: Ogletree has top 10 talent. The problem is that he get into trouble and sometimes seems to not go 100%. Previously I had him at 8 to the Bills but now he has falled to the Vikings. Maybe this is best because he can play around a bunch of hungry guys ready to make a long playoff run. Previous Pick: Keenan Allen – WR – Cal.

Desmond Trufant – CB – Washington

24)Indianapolis Colts – Desmond Trufant – CB – Washington: Trufant really help his draft status at the combine. He has now replaced Banks as the second corner and finds himself in the first round. Although the person is different I still have the Colts taking the second overall corner in the draft. Previous Pick: Jonathan Banks – CB – Miss St.

25)Minnesota Vikings – Keenan Allen – WR – Cal: The Seahawks traded this pick to the Vikings for Percy Harvin. That makes the Vikings needing a new WR. Allen is the best fit for their system. He gives them a big threat when he is healthy. I think if the Vikings can get a WR with this pick then this trade can really benifit both teams. Previous Pick: Sam Montgomery – DE – LSU.

26) Green Bay Packers – Monree Ball – RB – Wisconsin: Ball is a running back that could take a heavy work load like he had in college. The Packers really need a running game so that teams can’t pin their ears back and attack Aaron Rogers. I think Ball can be the beginning of that transition along with a back or two to spell some of the load. I like Ball a lot and see him helping the Packers a lot. Previous Pick: No Change.

27) Houston Texans – Quinton Patton – WR – Louisiana Tech: I think Patton would fit perfectly with Andre Johnson. The Texans became so single focused in the passing game that during the playoffs and late in the season. It was one of the reasons they didn’t go farther in the playoffs. I think Patton can help in that regard or they can even choose Keenan Allen from Cal. Previous Pick: Justin Pugh – OT – Syracuse.

28) Denver Broncos – Ezekiel Angah – DE – BYU: The Broncos need to get help up front in all aspects of the game. Their DL play was weak at the end of the year and they need a pick me up. Angah could be a nice fit in Denver. BYU  DT has seen his stock rise a bit but I think this could be a great fit for him. The Broncos could go CB or WR at this pick as well. Previous Pick: Xavier Rhodes – CB – Florida St.

29) New England Patriots – Xavier Rhodes – CB – FLorida St.: Rhodes is a solid player and I think the Patriots like what they see from the way he approaches the game. They may go WR if they lose Welker but I see him returning. Matt Elam from Florida could also be an option at S if they like him better than Rhodes. Previous Pick: Justin Hunter – WR – Tennessee.

30) Atlanta Falcons – Zach Ertz – TE – Standford: Ertz will fill in where Tony Gonzalez leaves off. It is possible that Gonzalez returns but I still see them taking Ertz or Eifert. That way when he does call it a career they will have someone in place to step in where he leaves off. Not saying it will be easy but it can be done. Previous Pick: No Change.

31) San Francisco 49ers -Sheldon Richardson – DT – Missouri: They already have a stout defense and the more weapons around Kapernick the better. I think with Justin Smith being banged up last year they lost a lot when he wasn’t in the game. Richardson could be a great spell for Smith who could also mentor him. Maybe even see that N. Iowa WR sneak in with his 4.19 40 yard dash. Previous Pick: Sylvester Williams – DT – North Carolina.

Manti Te’o – LB – Notre Dame

32) Baltimore Ravens – Manti Te’o – LB – Notre Dame: His stock has plummeted! He sucked at the combine and then there is the Catfish thing. I still think he is a good football player. Speed isn’t everything as quickness is a big factor. The Ravens need a new face at linebacker and why not Te’o. Previous Pick: Kevin Minter – LB – LSU.

Summary: There were five new faces this time around in Geno Smith, Tavon Austin, Desmond Trufant, Ezekiel Angah, and Quinton Patton. The five they replaced are Damontre Moore, Matt Elam, Jonathan Banks, Sam Montgomery, and Kevin Minter. This won’t be the last mock draft before the big day so more is subject to chance.

Cooler Talk 2/26/13

There are several sports topics I would like to discuss today. Danica Patrick and the Dayton 500, the LA Lakers and Dwight Howard, Manti Te’o’s combine, Tom Brady’s new contract, and many more. These will be my personal opinions on these specific topics.

1) Daytona 500: I can’t say I watched the entire race. I watch laps 1-5 then came back to watch laps 170-200. I think in total I watched 30-40 laps of the race. The big topic during my view time was Danica Patrick. How she was first woman to do this and that. If she and others want there to be true equal rights in racing then she doesn’t need to get special treatment. The thing I found most odd was when James Franco told the drivers to start their engines he said. “Drivers and Danica, Start Your Engines!” Really, Why does she need to be singled out? Until she proves herself as a front runner for the cup I think people should layoff. Let he race and drive in piece. If I was in her shoes I’d hate all the attention because I know I would be watched so closely. I feel all this attention cost her 5 spots in the finish. She didn’t allow herself to make the big risk move like Dale Erhart Jr. did. Instead she stayed where she was and didn’t make the big move because she knew everyone was watching her and therefore got 8th not 3rd.

2) Dwight Howard & Lakers: The Lakers are 3 games back from the playoffs. They think Howard will be a long time Laker. I’m sorry to tell you but he will not resign with you and will be in Brooklyn next year. He isn’t the super hero that he wants people to view him as but rather a super villain. This guy isn’t a team player and really at this point is just a joke. He doesn’t take things seriously and the Lakers won’t make the playoffs and since they didn’t trade Howard they will get nothing for this wasted season. They better hope to have a strong draft or they could miss two years of the playoffs.

3) Manti Te’o: Did he stink at the combine or what. I think this Te’o drama is really heating up. I don’t think he should have ever been invited to the Heisman presentation as I don’t think he is as good as people believe. I think that the only reason he was there was because of the heart felt story that we later learned was a fake.  I think there is much more under the surface than we can imagine. I don’t think he will be a great player in the NFL but could be a contributor for the right team. For his sake things better get better fast.

4) Tom Brady: Well done Brady…..well done. Not only do you have a contract until you are 40 but you also allow the Patriots to resign players to get you back to the Super Bowl. Wes Welker should be resigned now and the Patriots are set for several more years. I think this move goes to show that some people do care about being the best ever. Let’s not get carried away though, this guys is still making millions of dollars but did take a pay cut in order to allow his team to build a complete team. And he proved he never wants to play for another team. Now the pressure is on Flacco. Flacco said he wants to be a lifetime Raven…..now prove it by not demanding a huge contract.

5) Blackhawks: Holy cow! The Blackhawks are 16-0-3 with 35 points. The next team is 8 points behind. This team has come out of the gates ready to win Lord Stanley’s cup. It is clear to me that this is the best team in the NHL right now but I don’t see them winning it all. Lets be honest, the NHL playoffs are a crap shoot most years. Whatever team can survive four, seven game series will win. I love the NHL playoffs. I think every team should make the playoffs. It would be fun and you never know what would happen.

6) NCAA Men’s Basketball: I’ll be honest I don’t always follow NCAA basketball until around this time. I think it is important to see what teams do well in their conference tournament to prepare them for the NCAA tournament. THis year I have watched more college basketball than in the past and my number one seeds are: Indiana, Duke, Michigan, and Kansas. I know the Jayhawks struggled at times but right now I think they are really heating up. I haven’t seen Gonzaga play so maybe I’ve missed something. Lets get to March and get this thing going.

 

 

7) Geno Smith: Did no one watch his second half of the season? He couldn’t read coverages, couldn’t make throws, and just looked lost. If I keep hearing how impressive he looks I’m gunna lose it!. I said the same thing about Blaine Gabbert and yet the Jaguars are still looking for a QB. Don’t be surprised when Geno flops. The ironic thing is that the Jaguars will probably once again make the big mistake in finding a franchise QB.

8) Steven Jackson: Jackson has decided to opt out of his contract with the Rams. This will make him one of the most sought after free agents this year. I would love fro him to sign with the Titans and become a nasty one-two punch with CJ2K. Honestly, I think he will end up with a contender like the Steelers, Broncos, Giants, or Redskins. Nonetheless, Jackson will be a hot topic come March 12th.

9) UFC 157: Rhonda Rousey proved women can be entertaining fights in the UFC as she defended he Women’s Bantamweight Title. The fight was impressive and I think this division could expand. Josh Koscheck on the other hand look bad against Robbie Lawler. Lawler knocked out Kos and looks to be back to full strength in his UFC return. All in all this was a good event with Lyoto Machida stealing the show against Dan Henderson.

10) MLB the Show 13: The best baseball video game will be released next Monday at midnight. My copy is already payoff as I am super excited. I can’t wait!!!!!!! If you don’t play MLB the Show then you are missing out!

2013 All-Ritchie Team (MLB)

The All-Ritchie team consist of 30 players. Each from a different team in MLB. The 30 players will make up a 25 man roster with 5 reserves. There will be 7 starting pitchers, 8 relief pitchers, 9 man starting lineup (c, 1b, 2b, 3b, ss, of, of, of, dh) 6 bench players (c, c, Inf, Inf, OF, OF).

These are some of the things I look for:

Loyalty is important. (Playing for 1 team) Playing hard every time I watch (run to first on ground outs etc.) Defense. Complete Hitter. Uniqueness. Fun to watch. If they ever played for the Braves its a plus.

Some of these names may surprise you but for me these are they players I like to watch for each team.

Rotation:

King Felix – Mariners – SP

1) Felix Hernandez – Mariners: Felix is one for the games best pitchers. The fact that he is now willing to spend his entire career in Seattle has me rooting for the Mariners. I love the way he presents himself on the mound. Easy selection to lead toe All-Ritchie Team Rotation.

2) David Price – Rays: Ever since he stepped into the majors as a closer in the playoffs and now as the Rays ace, I have just loved him. He goes out there every game and competes to win. What a great athlete, leader, and pitcher.

3) Mark Burhle – Blue Jays: First off his defense is outstanding! I’ve never seen shortstops make the types of plays he does. He is an all out competitor and great player to watch.

Jeff Samardzija – SP – Cubs

4) Jeff Samardzija – Cubs: I hated him as a WR at Notre Dame…..then he picked baseball over football and instantly I loved him. In my opinion baseball is the greatest sport hands down! He made the right choice.

5) Tyson Ross – Padres: I loved this kid when he was in Oakland. I think he can flat out pitch. You can tell he thinks about every situation before he throws which sometimes hurts him. I think he has outstanding potential.

Reserve Starters:

1) Ted Lilly – Dodgers: He may not make the Dodgers rotation this year but ever single time he steps on the mound he is ready and willing to battle. He doesn’t always have the best stuff but he will give you all he has.

2) Jair Jurrjens – Orioles: JJ was one of my favorite Braves and I wish he could still be in Atlanta. I like is calm cool manner he has on the mound. He is fun to watch but sometimes he struggles. I hope him the best in his comeback in Baltimore.

Craig Kimbrel – Braves – Closer

Bullpen:

CL – Craig Kimbrel – Braves: As a Braves fan there is not a single player I’m more excited about when he enters the game. He has absolute nasty stuff and loves the pressure.
SU – Chris Perez – Indians: He reminds me of the guy from east bound and down. Looks like a bum but pitches like a mad man.
SU – Joakim Soria – Rangers: Once a great closer for the Royals, he now has to re-establish himself after injuries. When he has his best stuff he is a gem.

RP – Glen Perkins – Twins: One of the games best lefty relievers. Nasty from the left side as left handed batters can’t touch him.

RP – Mike Gonzalez – Brewers: At one time was a closer for the Braves. I love his delivery. He does this rocking motion when there are no runners that keeps hitters off balance even though it is the same every time.

Sam LeCure – RP – Reds

RP – Sam LeCure – Reds: Best facial hair in baseball. I’m friends with his brother. He has strike out stuff. Always fun to watch.

RP – Michael Dunn – Marlins: He was the key piece in the Dan Uggla trade with the Braves. Good lefty arm. Could be where Venters is today.

Reserve Arm:

RP – Octavio Dotel – Tigers: Had a brief stent in Atlanta. Always competes on the mound. Will always be a good bull pen arm for any team.

Starting Line Up:

C – Yadier Molina – Cardinals: His defense alone is worth the selection.

1B – Adam LaRoche – Nationals: Has great defense. Was a good player for the Braves. I just like everything he is about.

2B – Jose Altuve – Astros: Best player on the Astros. I’d love to have him on the Braves over Dan Uggla any day.

3B – Pablo Sandoval – Giants: How do you not like a guy named Kung Fu Panda?

SS – Derek Jeter – Yankees: Let’s be honest…who doesn’t like watching they way he a plays the game?

OF – Mike Trout – Angels: One of the best all around player I’ve ever seen. Reminds me of a young Barry Bonds. Greatness just flows through him.

OF – Andrew McCutchen – Pirates: Amazing athlete. Will be ob cover of MLB the SHow ’13.

OF – Alex Gordon  – Royals: Great defense. Great offense. Great leader.

Alex Gordon – OF – Royals

DH – Paul Konerko – White Sox: One of the great loyal players. Does it all right.

Bench Players:

C – David Ross – Red Sox: Will be the one player I miss the most from last years Braves team not named Chipper Jones. Great defense. Solid bat. Best backup catcher in the game.

INF – Michael Young – Phillies: Wish he still played for the Rangers. Can play any position. A real team player.

OF – Coco Crisp – A’s: Come on his name is Coco Crisp. Plus he plays good defense.

UTIL – Martin Prado – Diamondbacks: Great player at any position. Really will do anything to help his team win.

Reserve Bench:

OF/1B – Lucas Duda – Mets: I think he is going to be an animal. So powerful.

C/3B/1B/OF – Jordan Pacheco – Rockies: How can you not love a guy that could play 8 different positions and at a decent level. All around utility guy.

Those are my 30 players that make up my All-Ritchie Team. Some of them are the best while some are just platoon players at best. Nonetheless each one of them hold a special place for me. 2013 MLB Preview/Predictions: Awards & Playoffs

Every year I like to try and predict the major award winners in MLB. These awards include Cy Young, MVP, Hank Aaron, Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Relief Man of the Year and  Comeback Player of the Year. This year I will also try and predict the Silver Sluggers for each position as well as the gold glove winners at each position. Then once I predicted those I will try the impossible and try and predict the World Series Champion by going through each round of the playoffs.

American League Award Winners

Most Valuable Player – Jared Weaver – Angels: Read below.

Cy Young Award – Jared Weaver – Angels: I think Weaver will continue to be one of the games top pitchers as he leads the Angels. I feel Weaver is capable of winning 25 games or more with the offense of the Angels behind him. He may even be able to get to the magical number of 30 that no one has gotten to in several years.

Hank Aaron Award – Miguel Cabrera – Tigers: Last year he won the triple crown as well as the MVP award. I think he is the games best hitter and shouldn’t have a problem winning the Hank Aaron Award again this year.

Rookie of the Year – Bruce Rondon – Tigers: The Tigers let Jose Valverde walk and therefore the era of Rondon begins. The Tigers look for him to have the type of success Craig Kimbrel has had in Atlanta. Rondon, like Kimbrel, is a hard throwing young reliever that had great success in every level in the minors. He will be the teams Opening Day closer.

Relief Man of the Year – Fernando Rodney – Rays: Last year Rodney won the award for comeback player of the year after bouncing back from injury to be the Rays closer. This year he is healthy once again and looks to continue that success. He is a real asset to the Rays late in games.

Comeback Player of the Year – Victor Martinez – Tigers: The Tigers had a crazy good line up last year when Delmon Young served as their DH. Now they get Martinez back who has the ability to hit .300 and 25 plus HRs. I think he is an easy lock for this award if he stays healthy.

Manager of the Year – Joe Maddon – Rays: Maddon does an out standing job in the NL East with a much lower pay role than the Yankees, Red Sox, and Blue Jays. If my earlier predictions come true and the Rays win the East he wins this award easy.

2B – Ian Kinsler – Rangers

Cy Young Award: Matt Cain  – Giants: I think Matt Cain has really developed into one of the best if not the best pitchers in the National League. He was really strong last year and I think he can continue that success this year. I see him winning 20 plus games and having an era around 2.00.

Hank Aaron Award: Joey Votto – Reds: Votto was injured the majority of last season but before he was injured he was having one of the best years around. I look for him to bounce back strong and lead the Reds to a division title and possible World Series Title.

Rookie of the Year: Jedd Gyorko – Padres: This kid displayed good power last year in the minors and is moving from third to second. I think he can really help the Padres and see him having a break out rookie campaign.

Relief Man of the Year: Craig Kimbrel – Braves: He is arguably the best young closer in the game. I see him staying that way for a few years as he racks up these awards.

Comeback Player of the Year: Joey Votto – Reds: See above.

Manager of the Year: Don Mattingly – Dodgers: If the Dodgers play up to their potential then they should win a lot of ball games. I think they will make the playoffs as a wild card team but don’t know how far they will go after that. Still their manager has to do a great job managing all of those personalities.

Playoff Predictions:

Wild Card Round:

Angels defeat Yankees: This will be a clash of two titans if you will. I think if Jared Weaver is on the mound for LA then they won’t lose. If scheduling messes that up then this game could be a toss up.

Braves defeat Dodgers: I think the Braves defeat the Dodgers because they have been here before and have better team chemistry. Some people may not value that idea but trust me it means a lot in baseball.

ALDS:

Tigers defeat Angels: I think the Tigers make it back to the World Series this year and with a 5 game series everything rides on pitching. I think Weaver is out standing but the Tigers rotation is better as a whole. Another Star studded affair in this series.

Rays defeat A’s: The battle of two small mart teams. The A’s never seem to be able to put it together in the playoffs and a strong pitching team like the Rays will give them trouble. The Rays advance in a close series that I think goes to game 5 in Tampa.

NLDS:

Braves defeat Nationals: The Nationals may win the division but I think the Braves can be on a roll late in the season going into the playoffs. They could get Brandon Beachy back who would give them another outstanding arm. This series will be won on the road in game five.

Reds defeat Giants: The Reds had the Giants right where they wanted then the Giants went on a tear and won the World Series. I don’t think the Reds forgot and with Votto completely healthy at this point and a newly acquired ace at the trade deadline the Reds will be poised to take this one.

ALCS:

Tigers defeat Rays: I think the Tigers with their pitching and offense get back to the World Series just one year after losing to the Giants. A more complete team in my opinion has a good chance to win the whole thing. The Rays won’t be any push over as this series will go to six or seven games before a winner is decided.

NLCS:

Reds defeat Braves: As a Braves fan I hope I’m wrong! If Dusty Baker stay out of the way then the Reds should make the World Series. I hope the Braves get there but if I want to be taken seriously as a writer and baseball predictor I must keep my hopes and dreams out of my predictions. Therefore I go with Reds hoping the Braves win instead.

 

World Series:

Reds vs. Tigers

Reds win if: For the Reds to win they will need their offense to carry them and their pitching to match what the Tigers do. As well as Dusty Baker to not screw anything up.

Tigers win if: Their rotation pitches like I think they are capable and Verlander put himself on a different level. Their offense just needs to out play the Reds.

In the end I think the Tigers win the World Series this year. Although they have a few big questions to answer before they get there I feel they are ready after coming close last year. Justin Verlander, Doug Fister and company will pitch really well this year. Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Victor Martinez and the gang will become one of the best offenses. I just see this year being all Detroit.

Next I will produce my 2013 All-Ritchie Team. Some will be from last year while others will be new faces. Remember these guys aren’t the best on their team but rather the player one each team I like watching the most because he plays the game the way I like. Those criteria will be discussed next time. 2013 MLB Preview\Predictions: NL East

The NL East is always a fun division. From the days the Braves won 14 straight division titles to the Phillies makes consecutive World Series to the Marlins going from Wild Card to World Champions to the Mets blowing the division lead twice and now the Nationals seem to be writing their story. I think the Nats will again take the division with the Braves winning another wild card berth.

1) Nationals – People will wonder if things would have been different if Stephen Strasberg would have pitched in the post season. This organization did a great job getting this team together after being down for so long.

Rotation: Stephen Strasberg looks to be fully healthy and doesn’t need to be monitored as much. Him along with Gio Gonzalez have given the Nationals two aces to lead a staff. Jordan Zimmerman and Ross Detwiler proved extremely valuable last year when Strasberg was shut down. Especially Zimmerman who had an era below 3.00. The Nats let Edwin Jackson go and brought in the veteran Dan Haren who pitched for the Angels last year. I think the top four can be great if Strasberg can stay healthy. Another question mark is if Gonzalez will be suspended after being named in the recent PED accusations out of Miami. For the Nats sake lets hope he isn’t suspended.

Catcher: Wilson Ramos will still be recovering from last years knee injury and will likely be worked in slowly as the backup catcher. Kurt Suzuki was acquired last year from the A’s and will likely be the opening day starter. Suzuki is more than capable of being an every day catcher although he doesn’t have as much of a power bat that Ramos can produce.

Infield: This offseason the Nats had the ability to not make many changes. When first baseman Adam LaRoche filed for free agency they knew they wanted him back in uniform. It took some time but in the end they got him back. The rest of the infield is also returning with Ian Desmond and Danny Espinoza up the middl. A major concern is Espinoza’s shoulder which forced his power number to dwindle. The Nationals will keep a close eye on the situation. At the hot corner is once again Ryan Zimmerman the all time spectacular Nationals leader. Keep a close eye on prospect Anthony Rendon to make a move to the big in the near future.

Outfield: The Nationals were not quite in wanting to improve their play in centerfield. The team traded for Denard Span from the Twins. Span will provide the Nationals with great defense and a true leadoff hitter. Last year Bryce Harper broke into the league and really impressed with his style of play. He looks to build on that and avoid a sophomore slump. Jason Werth looks to have a year more like he did when he was a Phillie. If he can do that this group could be one of the best. Roger Bernadina looks to be a backup outfielder after never really taking control of the CF position.

Bullpen: The Nationals really only acquired three new people. One is new closer Rafael Soriano. Soriano was a effective closer for the Yankees once Rivera went down. He is a veteran who has been around the league and knows how to pitch. Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen have proven their worth to the Nationals and look to be the Nationals lefty/righty setup men.

2) Atlanta Braves – The Braves begin a new era without Chipper Jones. The team make some major changes to the roster including losing three pitchers in Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens, and Randall Delgado. In doing so they improved their already get bullpen and will field one of the games best outfields.

Rotation: Late last year Kris Medlen showed that he is ready to be the staff ace. After serving in the bullpen he went back into the rotation to go 10-1 with an era of 1.57 on the year. If he can reproduce that for a full year then he will win the NL Cy Young. Tim Hudson is back to prove to Atlanta that after this year he can still pitch and they should bring him back. Paul Maholm was the Braves trade deadline pick up that was very successful in his he town. Mike Minor showed flashes of being great as well as young struggles. Those four seems to be a solid four with top prospect Julio Tehran getting his chance to finally pitch regularly for the big league club. Brandon Beachy will return in June from Tommy John and could make a big impact almost like a midseason acquisition. This rotation maybe a concern for Atlanta if they struggle.

Catcher: Brian McCann needs to have a bounce back season after only hitting .230 with 20hrs. There is a chance that this is McCann’s last season in Atlanta. He may not even be in the opening day lineup if not fully healthy. The Braves brought in Gerald Laird to backup McCann but he or Christian Bethancourt could be the starter opening day. Bethancourt looks to be the future at catcher for the Braves.

Infield: The lose of Chipper is huge but if Freddie Freeman and Dan Uggla can produce at first and second then less pressure will be on third base to produce like Chipper. Andrelton Simmons established himself as the Braves SS last year and looks to be the lead off hitter with Bourn gone. At third base will be Chris Johnson and Juan Francisco splitting time until one of them claims the position. Paul Janish and Ramiro Pena look to be other backup options. This group is well rounded and plays good defense. Only time will tell how much Chipper is missed in his first year gone.

Outfield: The Braves rebuilt the outfield with the exception of Jason Heyward. First the Braves signed B.J. Upton to a contract to play centerfield left by the Bourn departure. Then later in the Winter they traded for B.J’s younger brother Justin Upton to play right. This starting outfield will be really fun to watch as each one is capable of being a 30/30 player. The defense should be great as well. Jose Costanza and Reed Johnson look to be the primary backups.

Bullpen: Buster Olney ranked this bullpen number 1 in baseball even before acquiring Jordan Walden from LA. Craig Kimbrel is the games top young closer and has two stellar setup men in Eric O’Flerherty and Jonny Venters. This will be the biggest strength the Braves have with their outfield being second.

3) Philadelphia Phillies – The Phillies are very capable of winning the division. They still have good pitching and some veterans that know how to win. My problem with this team is that the majority of the talent is on their last leg. Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee aren’t the pitchers they once were and I can’t remember the last time Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins were relevant.

Rotation: As mentioned Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee will anchor the staff once again. Cole Hamels will be the three even though I feel he is the best on staff. Kyle Kendrick is set to be the fourth starter. For several years now I felt Kyle Kendrick could be a front line starter but now after last season I don’t. The Phillies signed John Lannan to a one year deal to be the teams fifth starter. I don’t think they have much depth which will prove to be a major problem.

Catcher: Carlos Ruiz will be out to start the season because of the PED test he failed. Ruiz has always been a reliable part of the Phillies. Erik Kratz will be the opening day starter as well as cover for Ruiz. The Phillies will be a lot weaker without Ruiz. That’s the price you pay for using.

Infield: The veterans will field every infield position. Ryan Howard used to be one of the games most feared first basemen. Now he is aging and not producing like once before. Chase Utley at second base can still be one of the games best. The problem is that he can’t stay healthy for an entire season anymore. Jimmy Rollins is always reliable and produces enough power from the lead off spot. At third base the Phillies acquired Michael Young via a trade with the Rangers. Young will try and produce when starting every day at third. His power may need to improve. Backup infielder Freddy Galvis will also miss 50 games because he was caught using PEDs.

Outfield: The Phillies will field mostly a brand new outfield this year. They traded for Ben Revere from the Twins to play center field. The highly questionable sign was Delmon Young who is slated to play right field. Young was primarily a DH for the Tigers last year and has very questionable defense. Left field will be a player returning but the Phillies don’t really know who that will be. Laynce Nix will more than likely be on the roster as a utility player. So that leaves either Dominic Brown or John Mayberry Jr for options in left field. I think Brown will have to go to AAA because Mayberry adds more value because he can play center if needed. Prospect Darin Ruf could also battle for the left field job.

Bullpen: Jonathan Papplebon is still a top closer in MLB. In order to strengthen their pen the Phillies went a got Mike Adams to set up Papplebon. Antonio Bastardo needs to improve from last season as well as Phillippe Aumont. Another new face is Chad Durban who seems to add depth to the bullpen.

4) New York Mets – The Mets will continue the rebuilding process. They did resign third baseman David Wright to keep him the face of the Mets. Then traded away Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey. The Mets do have a core group of young players but I don’t see them being ready to compete until a few more years.

Rotation: The Mets say Johan Santana is fully healthy and ready to take a full work load. If that actually does happen and he starts 30 plus games I will be shocked! Johan can still pitch and he will try and prove that this year. The Mets have always been real high on Jonathan Niese as he looks to be the teams two. Shawn Marcum was signed to replace the hole left by Dickey at three. Matt Harvey showed a lot of promise last season and will be back. Dillion Gee is returning from surgery and looks to bounce back strong. Then there is top spec Zack Wheeler who is on track to join the rotation midseason but if he shows promise then he could break into majors out of spring training. If healthy and they fill their potential then this staff could be one to keep an eye on.

Catcher: The Mets traded last years starter in the Dickey deal and in return got John Buck and top catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud. Buck looks to be the opening day starter with d’Arnaud being the future. Buck has a power bat behind the plate but doesn’t hit for a high average. Anthony Recker looks to be the backup if the hold d’Arnaud back until later. Personally I think d’Arnaud will win the starting job with Buck being his backup.

Infield: David Wright signed an eight year contract to stay a Met possibly for life. With Ike David across from him those two could be a powerful one, two punch for years. Daniel Murphy at second has an outstanding ability to get base hits and get on base. He is just the type of player to hit in front of Wright and Davis. At shortstop is a defensive specialist who’s bat is good enough to leadoff and his speed is not to shabby either. Brandon Hicks seems to be the new backup in the infield along with Justin Turner.

Outfield: This young outfield has huge potential but it may take a while for them all to click. Lucas Duda plans to be the power hitter of the group. Eventually I think he will be a 40 home run guy but at first base. Since that is blocked by Davis he will have to play outfield for now. Kurt Nieuwenhuis looks to be the speedy fielding specialist who started last year on fire before injuries. In center field he looks to split time with Collin Cowgill. The Mets did sign veteran Marlon Byrd who could see some time but the third starter looks to be Mike Baxter.

Bullpen: The bullpen was just awful last year and Frank Francisco is already a big question mark and maybe out as closer already. The Mets did sign Brandon Lyon who could potentially be in line to close. Bobby Parnell and Pedro Feliciano look to be key contributors in the pen as well.

5) Miami Marlins – I’m not going to give the Marlins the same break down as everyone else. They are a disgrace to MLB and it is a crime what they did to the city of Miami. Get a new image and stadium, pretend you are signing guys to compete only to trade every single one of them the next year. It is a travesty to the game of baseball and MLB should do something to stop it. Giancarlo Stanton is atop talent but I won’t be surprised when he is traded at the trade deadline. It is wrong and they deserve better in Miami. This organization is a joke so I won’t go into any more detail.

I think the Nationals maybe the most complete team in the National League. If they live up to their potential then no one else in the division has a chance. I think the Braves make the playoffs as the wild card team. That and more playoff predictions next. So read on and keep the Ice Hot.

2013 MLB Preview/Predictions: NL Central

I went into this division thinking one thing and now I truly don’t know who is going to do what. My number 1 hasn’t changed but 2-5 is a crap shoot. The Reds to me are the best team in the division by far with 4 other decent teams that can either be really good or really bad. I think the team that stays the healthiest has a chance and the Cardinals are already down a man.

1) Cincinnati Reds – The Reds maybe the most complete team in the National League. Staying healthy will be important as well as getting good production out of their pitching staff. I don’t agree with everythig this team is doing nor do I think Dusty Baker is the man for the job.

Rotation: The Reds are looking to make Aroldis Chapman into a starter. I truly think this is a mistake. Chapman has the ability to be the games best closer and has yet figured out how to pace himself when he starts. You can’t throw 100mph for 5-6 innings. It took Justin Verlander learning that in order for him to become the starter he is. Johnny Cueto will be the ace as he went 19-9 last year with a 2.78 era. Matt Latos had a strong first year with the Reds and looks to build on that success. Bronson Arroyo and Homer Bailey look to hold down the 3 and four again this year with Chapman being the 5. I say keep Chapman in bullpen and allow Mike Leake to pitch in the fifth spot again.

Catcher: Devin Mesoraco looks to be the catcher of the future but with his struggles the Reds have allowed Ryan Hanigan to start. They also signed Miguel Olivo to a minor league deal and if he bounces back the everyone in the Reds line up could hit over 15 HRs a piece.

Infield: Joey Votto missed a major part of 2012 with a knee injury. The Reds say he is fully recovered and should be back in the NL MVP hunt this season. Brandon Phillips will once again play next to him at second with his outstanding defense and bat. Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier had break out seasons last year and look to keep growing. Personally I thought Frazier was the NL ROY over Bryce Harper but the hype of Harper gave him the crown.Jason Donald, Jack Hannahan, and Cesar Izturis have been aquired in order to add depth in the infield. Don’t look past the Reds signing Scott Rolen down the stretch to add depth and leadership.

Outfield: Their biggest acquisition this off-season was Shin-Shoo Choo. Choo will replace Drew Stubbs in center as long as his defense holds up. He will add experience to the lead off spot as he hit .283 last year for Cleveland. The Reds resigned Ryan Ludwick who had a stellar season for them last year as he really stepped up with Votto being out. Jay Bruce will be in right field again this year as he add a lot of left handed power to the lineup. Chris Heisey will be the primary backup with Xavier Paul.

Bullpen: With Chapman moving to the rotation the Reds resigned Jonathan Broxton to be their everyday closer. I think has re-found his ability to close out games which makes the Chapman move a little easier. Sean Marshall will be his primary set up man. Sam LeCure will get a chance to pitch in more key situation, which I love as he is one of my favorite players and I’m a friend of his older brother.

2) Milwaukee Brewers – I’m not really sure why I’ve selected them to finish second. I don’t see but one team from this division making the playoffs this year. The Brewers have a great offense and if some young pitching can perform this this team could be like the A’s of 2012.

Rotation: The Brewers will go with a lot of young starters rather than trying to sign high priced fee agents. I think if they would decide to go sign Kyle Loshe then they would benefit greatly. Yovani Gallardo is the ace of the staff and really needs to have a strong year if the Brewers will compete. Wily Peralta looked great in six starts last year and will be a strong contributor next year. Mark Rogers also looked ML ready in his 7 starts. If those three can pitch well and Marco Estrada, Chris Narveson, and Mike Fiers can combine the last two spots then this rotation may just be better than most people expect.

Catcher: Jonathan Lucroy hit .320 last year and has really taken over the catcher position that he used to have to platoon in order to play. Martin Maldonado played in 78 games last year and hit 8HRs. He looks to once again show that he can be an effective backup in the majors.

Infield: The Brewers already lost Corey Hart to injury. Last year it was Mat Gamel when Hart had to move to first. Gamel looks ready to leave last year behind him and be the everyday first baseman. Rickie Weeks will return at second base but needs to improve his .230 average. I look for Weeks to hit anywhere from .260-.280 with 25-30 HRs. Aramis Ramirez had a good first year with the Brew Crew and will be back at the hot corner. After losing Alex Gonzalez to a knee injury last year they found comfort in Jean Segura who showed he can play every day at short. Alex Gonzalez and Taylor Green look to be the backups for this squad.

Outfield: Ryan Braun maybe surrounded in controversy but one thing is certain, he is a great player. Could have easily been the NL MVP last year (I would have voted for him). He is back in left with Carlos Gomz in center and Norichika Aoki in right. All three of these outfielders stole thirty bases last year. The team let Tony Plush aka Nyjer Morgan go and therefore Logan Schafer could benefit being the new backup outfielder.

Bullpen: The Brewers had they worst bullpen last year and therefore they revamped it. John Axford will be back to close but Jim Henderson along with newcomers Burke Baenhop, Tom Gorzelanny, and Michael Gonzalez will replace Francisco Rodriguez, Jose Veras, Kameron Loe, and Manny Parra. Johnny Hellwig also looks to break into the majors for the bullpen.

3) St. Louis Cardinals – The Cardinals received a huge blow when Chris Carpenter was shut down for the year. The aren’t sure the health status of a few individuals including Jaime Garcia who opted against shoulder surgery in the fall. The team doesn’t know how well Rafael Furcal will be when the season starts and are counting on several young pitchers to carry the team.

Rotation: Carpenter is out. Adam Wainwright is back and needs to be better than last year as his ERA was barley under 4.00. Jamie Garcia didn’t get his shoulder fixed and may not be reliable because of it. Jake Westbrook is Jake Westbrook and will sometime be great and other times give up 5 runs in the first. Lance Lynn looked outstanding last year but can he continue that success or have a set back? Shelby Miller looked great in limited time and really needs to be stellar so the Cardinals can find their next generation pitching star. All of that combined leads to a rotation full of question that won’t be answered until later.

Catcher: The best defensive catcher in the game will help this rotation as much he can. Yadier Molina has also developed his bat into something pitchers have to fear a little bit. Molina really is one of the top talents and my favorite Cardinal (Really Dislike everyone else{Call me a bitter Braves fan if you will}). I’m not sure who his backup is as it really doesn’t matter unless Molina gets hurt.

Infield: Rafael Furcal was injured late in the year last year and they don’t know where his health is at the moment. If he isn’t 100% or doesn’t bounce back the Cards are in trouble. They did sign Ronny Cedeno to add depth and Pete Kozma played there last year but neither are a leadoff hitter which they will really miss. The corner spots are filled by David Freeze and Allen Craig. Both of these players are good up and comers that helped the Cardinals forget about Pujols. The biggest question is second base. Why can’t they ever find a good second basemen? I think Daniel Descalso and Matt Carpenter are both just awful! They need to hand the reigns over to Kolton Wong who I feel will be in the majors cone June anyway. Seriously if I was a GM I’d never have Descalso on my @% man roster let alone start him! PS: Why in the world did they sign Ty Wigginton!?

Outfield: I lied earlier. I forgot about Jon Jay. Him and Molina I can actually say I like watching. Jay will start in center with Carlos Beltran in right and Matt Holliday in left. Holliday and Beltran have to stop producing at some point right? Both are very talented and are key pieces in the Cardinals success. Allen Craig can play some outfield with Shane Robinson and Adron Chambers being used as backup outfielders.

Bullpen: I have to give this bullpen credit. They have really been rebuilt into a top bullpen after struggling early last year. Jason Motte is a good closer with Mitchell Boggs and Randy Choate setting him up. Marc Rzepczynski is also a very valuable left handed reliever.

4) Pittsburgh Pirates – The Pirates shoed a lot of movement in the right direction last year only to slip at the end of the year. Their pitching needs to be better all year round to match their offense. Andrew McCutchen is an animal and great player to watch. I’m happy he will grace us on the cover of MLB The Show ’13 (best game on the planet!). I just don’t know if they have down enough to compete a full 162 games.

Rotation: A.J. Burnett looked decent in his resurgence attempt with the Pirates last season. This year he can either be better or worst and I see him being worst. The Pirates did finally finalize a deal with Francisco Liriano who I feel will be the staffs best pitcher in 2013. He joins lefty Wandy Rodriguez in the Pirates rotation. Rodriguez needs to be a little better like he was when he was with the Astros. In my opinion one of the games best kept secrets is James McDonald. I truly belive one of these years he will break out for 20 plus wins and lead a team in ERA. I don’t know if that is this year or not. Filling the rotation will either be Jeff Karstens or Kyle McPherson with an eye on Gerrit Cole in the very near future.

Catcher: The catcher position was a real question mark last year for the Pirates and therefore they signed FA Russell Martin. Martin adds more power to the lineup even though he only hit .211 last year with the Yankees. Michael McKenry will back up Martin after playing in 88 games for the Pirates last year.

Infield: I really like 3/4 infield starters. I think Garrett Jones is good at first, Pedro Alvarez is growing into a stud at third, and Neil Walker is a top second baseman. Clint Barmes at shortstop is the one I have trouble with but with no other option I guess they’ll live with it. Josh Hairson and Gaby Sanchez look to make the roster and I really like both of them as well. If it was me Jones would move to right field with Sanchez starting at first.

Outfield: I LOVE Andrew McCutchen! Great player, plays the game right and leads this team. I’m a little confused what they will do in the corner spots. Right now they are penciling Starling Marte to play left and lead off with Travis Snider starting in right. Personally I favor Alex Presley and like a mentioned before Jones in right. Josh Harrison, Jose Tabata, Presley, and Jerry Sands will battle for time in the outfield as well.

Bullpen: Joel Hanrahan is gone to Boston and therefore veteran Jason Grilli will get his chance to close becoming the third oldest closer behind Mariano Rivera and Joe Nathan. The Pirates have insurance with Mark Melancon who did some closing for the Astros in the past. Jared Hughes and Tony Watson look to add nice depth a ability to the mix.

5) Chicago Cubs – As I mentioned in the NL West post I feel two teams may surprise people and actually make a run at the playoffs. The first being the Padres and the second being the Cubs. I think the Cubs could be very good or once again very bad. I mean a team that lost 101 games last year can only get better right?

Rotation: Former Notre Dame football stand out Jeff Samardzija will be the staff ace this year if you can call him that. I like the way in which he competes and his numbers were decent last year. Edwin Jackson is one of those pitchers that once he puts it all together he will be pretty darn good. Matt Garza signed with the Cubs a few years ago and still has yet to live up to their standards. Once again if he puts it all together he can be really good. Scott Baker, Scott Feldman, and Travis Wood are all new this year and are battling for a spot in the rotation. I think Wood and Baker can emerge as starters with Feldman working in the pen even though he signed with Chicago to be a starter.

Catcher: Wellington Castillo showed some promise as the Cubs catcher. He only played in 52 ML games last year after Giovanny Soto was traded. Dioner Navarro was brought in to be the backup catcher and may become Matt Garza’s personal catcher since they worked together in the past in Tampa Bay.

Infield: I LOVE THIS INFIELD!!! I think they have a perfect blend of power on the outside with Anthony Rizzo and Ian Stewart and speed and fielding on the inside with Starlin Castro and Darwin Barney. Also their backups Luis Valbuena and Josh Vitters really add nice depth. If this team is going to produce the surprise outcome then this group needs to be stellar and I think they very much will.

Outfield: As much as I love the infield I HATE the outfield. David DeJesus is old and not the same player he was in Kansas City years back. He can still be effective but I think they need to go ahead and move to the Brett Jackson Era. Alfonso Soriano still has good ability but his work ethic and drive just seems to be gone. I used to love watching him play, now I just have to look away. I like Nate Schierholtz but as a backup. I think he is very good off the bench but here he will be asked to start every day. Scott Hairston will be a great addition and in my opinion should start in right field. My Cubs starting outfield would be Soriano because he is paid so much and still has great ability. Alongside Brett Jackson and Scott Hairston.

Bullpen: Ole Carlos Marmol…sometime he a top closer. Other times he is just unacceptable. The Cubs did sign a Japanese closer in Kyiji Fujikawa. He had 220 saves in 12 seasons in Japan and could take the closer role from Marmol. Shawn Camp and James Russell look to have better season in order to better this bullpen.

I think the Reds will win the division by 5 plus games if not more. A few teams can surprise and a few may disappoint. I can’t wait for all the Cardinal fans to raise HELL about this prediction but I only call it how I see it. Too many questions for them to answer right now. I will say, if they end up signing Kyle Loshe I would bump them up to second in a heart beat. (I hope that doesn’t happen!) Cubs and Brewers could be sleepers as they are both getting better.

2013 MLB Preview/Predictions: NL West

The defending World Series Champion San Francisco Giants come into the season very optimistic about repeating. Their division opponents hope to keep them out of the playoffs all together. The Dodgers have put together an impressive payroll with hope that it pays off. Only time will tell if these moves pan out.

1) San Francisco Giants – I feel the defending champions have two of the top pitchers in baseball and know just what it takes to win a title. They have big targets on their backs but with their experience comes confidence.

Rotation: Matt Cain and Madison Bumgardner have really developed themselves into two front line starters. With these two starters any team could quickly become contenders. Then you throw in Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum and you have a nasty three. Big Time Timmy Jim will need to bounce back from a disappointing 2012 season and if he can then the Giants will be outstanding. The four and five for the Giants very well could be twos and threes for most clubs. Ryan Vogelsong and Barry Zito completes the ultra talented rotation.

Catcher: Buster Posey was the NL MVP last year and after bouncing back from the leg injury we learned just how valuable he can be. Hitting .336 and 24HRs Posey looks to keep developing into the games best catcher. Hector Sanchez is back to play catcher whenever Posey plays first or takes a day off.

Infield: Since the 25 man roster only lost 4 players from the WS team this group is basically returning in full. Brandon Belt will start at first, Pablo Sandoval at third, and Marco Scutaro and Brandon Crawford up the middle. The Giants hope to get more power numbers from Sandoval and Belt who combined for 19 HRs. They both should be hitting 19 a piece. Joaquin Arias looks to be the infield backup with Posey playing some first base when needed.

Outfield: Hunter Pence proved to be a valuable addition down the stretch. He returns in right with Angel Pagan resigning to play center again. Gregor Blanco and Andres Torres will battle for time in left field. Brandon Belt could also play outfield on days Posey plays first.

Bullpen: As of right now Brian Wilson isn’t returning to the Giants. He missed almost all of last season which allowed Sergio Romo to emerge as the clubs closer. The strong bullpen still has Javier Lopez, Jeremy Affeldt, and Santiago Castilla so they still will be one of the best.

2) Los Angeles Dodgers – A $220 million payroll….WOW! The Dodgers have put together an impressive roster on paper. If that translates into wins then the Dodgers should easily win 100 games. The problem is a lot of those players are rehabbing from injury or  are just plain over paid in my opinion.

Rotation: Clayton Kershaw is a top line starter. He’s one of the top lefties in the league and will lead this staff once again. The Dodgers signed big time FA Zach Greinke to be their number two. Greinke was heavily sought after as a FA and the Dodgers were willing to pay him the most. Next the Dodgers decided to go the international route by signing top Korean pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. We don’t know how this will play out but they have depth in case it doesn’t. Chad Billingsley will be their four. That’s a pretty good four! Josh Beckett was at one time a ace but now is a five and a chance to not make the rotation if he struggles. Chris Capuano, Aaron Harang, and Ted Lilly all are on the outside looking in. In case of injuries these are valuable extras. I will say the Dodgers have the best rotation 1-8.

Catcher: A.J. Ellis seems to have solidified the catching position in LA. He hit .270 last year with 13HRs and I see both of those improving. His backup is TBD but Tim Federowicz looks to be the guy in line for the job. At 25 he has only played in 10 ML games.

Infield: At the trade deadline last year the Dodgers acquired Hanley Ramirez and Adrian Gonzalez in order to boost their infield’s production. Hanley never really picked his average up while Gonzalez’s power seems to be dwindling. The Dodgers want Hanley to play SS but I don’t think he can at a high level and don’t think it will work. I see him moving to third once Luis Cruz fails to keep third base steady. Dee Gordon will eventually be back but his defense has been sup par. Mark Ellis seems to be the favorite at second with Nick Punto and Skip Shumaker backing up where needed. I do see Adrian Gonzalez having a big year back in the NL. Juan Uribe is also still on the roster but I’m not sure where he will fit.

Outfield: Matt Kemp is by far the best player on the roster, when healthy. Kemp is coming off shoulder surgery but I see him bouncing back fully. Carl Crawford was also acquired last year but has yet to play as a Dodger and is the biggest question mark. I think his days of being an all star are over. The Dodgers just hope they can get some sort of production out of him. Andre Either was on the trade block but will remain a Dodger for now. He will once again play right field. Scott Hairson will serve as primary backup with Skip Shumaker.

Bullpen: Brandon League will hold the closer role for the Dodgers. Last year he blew 6 saves. Around him the Dodgers brought in J.P. Howell in order to give his support and another closer option. Kenley Jansen is another reliable guy in the pen with Jay Guerra and Matt Guerrier trying to bounce back.

3) Arizona Diamondbacks – Justin Upton is gone and the Dbacks make a lot of changes but I think this maybe the best Dbacks team in years. Their pitching is deep and improved while their hitters seem to mesh well.
Rotation: The Dbacks feel they have a strong front four starters in Ian Kennedy, Trevor Cahill, Brandon McCarthy, and Wade Miley. Miley almost won the NL ROY award last year and looks to be one of the games rising stars. McCarthy took a ball to the head the last time he pitched but seems okay after the Dbacks ran him through all kinds of test before signing him. Kennedy had 21 wins in 2011 only to go 15-12 in 2012. If he can get his groove back then the Diamondbacks have a real chance to challenge for the division. The fifth spot rotation will be held by one of Arizona’s rising stars. Randall Delgado was acquired in the Justin Upton trade and has a good chance to make the rotation. I actually think that Tyler Skaggs will get the nod and if he struggles Delgado will be next in line with Patrick Corbin waiting and Daniel Hudson still trying to get back from Tommy John surgery.

Catcher: Miguel Montero has been the the stable force in the lineup for a while. He is a good offensive and defensive catcher. He is a club house leader and seems to be a fan favorite. Wil Nieves will be his backup and is one of the best in the league. He hit .301 in 32 games last year.

Infield: The main piece in the Upton trade was Martin Prado. Prado then signed a four year deal to occupy third base. Paul Goldschmidt is back at first with Aaron Hill at second. Cliff Pennington will more than likely start a SS with the extremely valuable Willy Bloomquist backing up each position. Veteran Eric Hinske was brought in as a key piece off the bench as he has proved how valuable his bat is off the bench. To boost their bench Eric Chavez was also signed after having success in New York with limited at bats. This is one of the deepest Arizona teams in years and it may allow them to challenge for the division.

Outfield: Cody Ross will take over for the Upton void with Jason Kubel back in left field. In center field the Dbacks feel Adam Eaton is ready to start in center. The problem for me with this lineup is the fact that the gold glove of Gerardo Parra will be forced to be a back up. I think Eaton will struggle and therefore Parra will start in center. Hinske will play some outfield along with Martin Prado when needed.

Bullpen: J.J Putz will be the staff’s closer with Heath Bell looking to bounce back to where he was with San Diego. David Hernandez and Brad Ziegler will be stable forces with new comer Tony Sipp coming over from Cleveland. Josh Collmenter also looks to be in the pen as the rotation is deep.

4) San Diego Padres – If there are two teams in baseball that could surprise people like the Orioles and A’s did last year, one is the Padres, and the other I will discuss when I get there. For now I have to predict both of those teams to finish low in their division. If they do compete for a playoff spot I wouldn’t be surprised but they must come a long way.

Rotation: This rotation was devastated by injuries last year and looks to be an area of concern for the Padres. The only two names we know that will be in the rotation are Clayton Richard and Edison Volquez. Both of those pitchers were stable forces last year and will be the aces of the staff. They signed Jason Marquis to a one year deal after he helped fill the void left by injuries. He could possibly win a starting spot as well. The Padres say they have about 10 pitchers to fill 5 spots in the rotation. It will be easier for me to say who I think those names will be. The previous mentioned three along with Tyson Ross from Oakland, and then Eric Stults should make up the rotation. Casey Kelly, Tim Stauffer, and Freddy Garcia would be the next names in line with Corey Luebke coming back in June from Tommy John.

Catcher: Nick Hudley hit a dismal .157 in 58 ML games last year. His production and amount of games played really needs to improve if he wants to stay in this lineup. John Baker did a little better hitting .238 in 63 games. Yasmani Grandal hit .297 with 8HR in 60 games for the Padres and looked like the future catcher before being suspended 50 games for testing positive for testosterone. He won’t be eligible to play until May 28th. At that point the Padres might get some stability back at catcher.

Infield: The story for me here this year is prospect Jedd Gyorko. He is normally a third baseman but will get a chance to win the job at second base as he is blocked by Chase Headley who broke out last year. I think Gyorko will be a real threat to win the NL ROY award as last year in the minors he hit .311 with 30HRs and 100RBIs. If he can join Headley in hitting 30 HRs then this club could have a stout offense. Yonder Alonso was my preseason favorite to win the NL ROY only to show little power hitting 9HRs. If he can hit 15 to 20 Hrs this year along with keeping his average above .270 then this team has a chance. At shortstop Everth Cabrera will once again lead off with his 44 stolen bases. Logan Forsythe will be primary backup if he doesn’t win the second base job.

Outfield: Cameron Maybin and Wil Venable are two of the most athletic outfielders that still need to develop their offense fully. They will be joined by Carlos Quentin in left field. Quentin had a solid year for the Padres but looks to produce a little more like the numbers he had in Chicago. Chris Denorfia proves to be a valuable asset as he can play anywhere in the outfield. Jesus Guzman and Mark Kotsay can also backup the outfield as well as Alonso at first base.

Bullpen: Long gone are the days of Heath Bell but Houston Street, Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher make the beginning of a strong core bullpen. Some of the pitchers who don’t make the rotation can also contribute in the pen. I think Sean O’ Sullivan will be one of those key names.

5) Colorado Rockies – I think the Rockies have a good offense. The problem is they had the league’s worst ERA last year and didn’t do much to improve the staff this year. Some key players are returning from injuries which should help, especially club house leader Troy Tulowitzki. I also like the hiring of former player Walt Weiss as manager.

Rotation: If Jhoulys Chacin and Jorge De La Rosa can have bounce back seasons this this rotation can be much better. It will be better solely on the fact that they will have a five man rotation rather than a four man like they did last year. Jeff Francis will also return to the rotation he has been a part of for several years. He does need to be better than his 5.58 ERA that plagued him last year. A group of young starters will all get a chance to prove to Weiss that they can pitch at this level. Juan Nicasio, Drew Pomeranz, Tyler Chatwood, and Christian Friedrich will all see time in this rotation throughout the year until someone shows that they are ready to be a full time big league starter. I think Chatwood and Pomeranz will start in the rotation and get the first chance to claim a rotation spot.

Catcher: Wilin Rosario was one of the games best offensive catcher last season when he hit 28HRs and .270 batting average. The problem being that he was the games worst defensive catcher with 13 errors and 21 passed balls. Weiss has expressed his belief in Rosario and knows that he has all the ability to improve his defense. Just in case he struggles again Yorvit Torrealba is back with Ramon Hernandez coming back from injury as well as the ultra utility guy Jordan Pacheco.

Infield: Tulowitzki will be back to reestablish himself as the games best all around SS. Todd Helton will once again hold down his stable position at first base. Josh Rutledge looks to keep a spot in the lineup by playing primarily at second. Last year he filled in mostly for Tulowitzki at shortstop. The speedy Chris Nelson hit above .300 last year and was a valuable piece at third. D.J LeMahieu, Jordon Pacheco, and Jonathan Herrera will be the infield backups with Pacheco being able to play anywhere on the diamond. This bunch will be greatly improved by having Tulo play every day.

Outfield: The other all-star on this team is Carlos Gonzalez. The left fielder tried to makeup for the loss of Tulo and had a pretty good year hitting .303 with 22HRs and 85RBIs. Dexter Fowler was mentioned in trade talks all summer only to sign a new contract to stay in Colorado. He is great defensively and is a stellar lead off hitter. Michael Cuddyer will have his second full season with the Rockies and looks to improve. I’d think with him playing in Colorado he should have more home runs than the 16 he hit last year. Eric Young Jr. will be valuable off the bench with his speed and defense. One thing Weiss said when he was hired is that this club would be much more aggressive on the base paths and with guys like Nelson, Fowler, Gonzalez and Young they should be. Tyler Colvin will more than likely hold the last bench spot.

Bullpen: The Rockie did make it a point to improve their bullpen by signing Manny Corpas, Miguel Batista, Wilton Lopez and rule 5 pick Daniel Rosenbaum. Those new faces will be added to closer Rafael Betancourt and lefty Rex Brothers. I think this group could be a real strength late in ball games.

I think on paper this division looks like a two team race to most people but several of the other teams look to be build strong cases for themselves.  I think the Dbacks and Padres will be teams to watch as they continue to develop talent and move into the right direction. In the end I think the Giants rotation is just too strong to be stopped but if that $220 million in LA can pan out then the Dodgers may just take the whole thing.

2013 MLB Preview/Predictions: AL West

The AL West is the hardest division for me to pick because the teams are so tight. Therefore I went ahead and picked 2 winners as I think both will make the playoffs or at least play each other in a 1 game playoff to decide the division winner.

1) Oakland Athletics – Last year Billy Beane did his thing and surprised MLB with the team he put together. This year more pressure will be on the A’s but I think their pitching can carry them to defend their AL West crown.

Rotation: Four of these starters are 25 and under with Brett Anderson being the staff ace. Bartolo Colon will try and redo the success he had before being suspended for PED usage. Jarrod Parker really showed he was ready for the bigs by having a good season. I think he gets better and eventually becomes the staff ace. Tommy Milone and A.J. Griffin will finish out the young staff. A.J. Griffin was stellar in his limited starts in 2012 and looks to build upon that success.

Catcher: John Jaso has finally arrived in Oakland. Billy Beane stated after they aquired Jaso that he has been trying for a few years to acquire the catcher who has the ability to get on base all the time. Derek Norris, who won the starting job last season, will split time with Jaso. Both of these catchers will be expected to make good contributions.

Infield: Brandon Moss was a bright spot for the A’s last year and allowed Beane the ability to trade Chris Carter to bring in Jed Lowie. Moss will start at first with Daric Barton trying to come back after being injured the majority of last year. Lowrie will add depth to the infield as well as added pop to those positions. At shortstop Beane signed Hiroyuki Nakajima out of Japan. The A’s hope he can solidify a position that saw five different starters throughout the season last year. Second base will garner a lot of attention in spring. Jemile Weeks, Scott Sizemore, and Adam Rosales all look to claim the position and with Lowrie now here this could be a season long battle. Personally I think Weeks will get the job and Lowrie will eventually take third base over from Josh Donaldson and Eric Sogard.

Outfield: Josh Reddick had a break out season last year and looks to be a fan favorite in Oakland along side Yoenis Cespedes in left and Coco Crisp in center. Seth Smith can fill in at either corner outfield position but looks to be the primary DH. Chris Young was also acquired this off-season from Arizona and looks to play any position as well as DH. This is a very deep outfield that Bob Melvin can work with all year.

Bullpen: Grant Balfour was the closer last year and had great success. He converted 24/26 saves. Ryan Cook his setup man posted a 2.09 era along side lefty setup guy Sean Doolittle. This core group seems to be strong again and strengthen a strong pitching staff.

1) Los Angeles Angels – The Angels made some big moves this off-season but I’m still skeptical if this pitching staff and keep them in games. The offense has the potential to be the best but the rotation and bullpen have huge question marks.

Rotation: Its hard to say a staff has question marks with an Ace like Jared Weaver. Yes Weaver was stellar as always but it was his four companions that didn’t help much. C.J. Wilson is the only other returning guy in the rotation and needs to pitch like he is getting paid. If he can bounce back the the Angels will do fine.Three new faces include Tommy Hanson, Joe Blanton, and Jason Vargas. Hanson needs to show his speed is back up and re-find what made him one of the games best young pitchers. Vargas has always been consistent in Seattle and should help this staff. Joe Blanton has shown signs of greatness but needs to do it more consistently.

Catcher: Chris Iannetta will once again handle the pitching staff. His numbers dipped since coming over from Colorado and needs to be better at the plate. Hank Conger looks to be his backup and maybe even eventually take over the duties. I think Conger is better defensively and if Iannetta struggles at the plate they may make the move to the better defender.

Infield: The infield is almost entirely intact from last year. Albert Pujols at first, Howie Kendrick at second, Eric Aybar at short, and Alberto Callaspo at third. Mark Trumbo seems to be the primary DH but showed he can play some first or third to give guys rest when needed. Long time backup Maicer Izturis is no longer an Angel and I think he will be greatly missed. Andrew Romine looks to take over that role in his departure.

Outfield: This group maybe the best defensive outfield in baseball. Mike Trout looks to prove anyone wrong who thinks he can’t be the player he was last year. Josh Hamilton was signed to play right field and looks to have a huge year with his new club. In center Peter Bourjos looks to have that covered but if he doesn’t hit better than .220 then veteran Vernon Wells can play his way into the lineup with Trout moving to center. Mark Trumbo can also split time in right field if needed.

Bullpen: This biggest question mark for the Angels and they trade away Jordan Walden to get Hanson. Signed Ryan Madson to be the closer even though he didn’t pitch at all last year when he went down with Tommy John in spring. If Madson can’t bounce back then they maybe in trouble. They also signed lefty specialist Sean Burnett to setup along side Ernesto Frieri. The bullpen really needs a big year to keep the Angels as contenders.

3) Texas Rangers – The Rangers will be the third team in this race and probably last as long as September. This team lost a lot of key players returning but also brought in some veterans in order to keep the club where it has been.

Rotation: Last year’s opening day starter Colby Lewis looks to return June 1st so the club will need to count on Matt Harrison to fill that position. Harrison was the most consistent starter last year. Yu Darvish showed signs of brilliants and signs of crap. Sometimes in the same game. If he can be great all the time then he will really help this staff. Derek Holland will be the three and looks to have more success. He had an era of 4.67 last year and wants to get that down closer to 3.00. The final two rotation spots will be big question marks. Alexi Ogando will move into the rotation after spending all of last year in the bullpen. The fifth spot looks to be between non-roster invitees Kyle McClellan, Randy Wells, and youngster Martin Perez. I think their best bet would be to put Wells in the bullpen and let McClellan start and if he struggles call up Perez with the idea that Lewis will be back in June.

Catcher: Mike Napoli signed with the Red Sox so the Rangers went and got another good hitting veteran to play catcher in A.J. Pierzynski. He adds a lot of power form behind the plate as does his backup Giovanny Soto. Both of these veterans can lead a staff as well as DH when needed.

Infield: This group consist of all returning players. Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus up the middle with Adrian Beltre and Mitch Moreland at the corners. Look for prospects Jurickson Profar and Mike Ott to be contributors off the bench or in case of injuries. The Rangers also signed Texas native Lance Berkman as their primary DH but Berkman can fill in at first or even right field if needed.

Outfield: Hamilton signed with rival LA and therefore that leave Nelson Cruz to step up big time to replace him. David Murphy will start in left with competition in center for that spot. Craig Gentry and Leonys Martin look to have a heated battle for that spot in the lineup. Julio Borbon may also reclaim it after spending all last year in AAA. The Rangers have also said they may look at Profar in center to see how he handles that transition. Whoever doesn’t win a starting stop will serve as primary backup.

Bullpen: The Rangers are basically rebuilding their bullpen. Closer Joe Nathan is returning but that is almost it. Joakim Soria was signed from Kansas City to be the setup guy and provide insurance behind Nathan. The Rangers also brought in Josh Lindblom for Michael Young and Jason Frasor to setup Nathan.

4) Seattle Mariners – The Mariners made a statement to their fans as they resigned Felix Hernandez to a new deal making him highest paid starter and locking him in for seven years. The Mariners just hope that within those seven years they can become contenders….I don’t see this year being that time.

Rotation: Arguably the best pitcher in the game, Felix Hernandez will anchor this staff for years to come. I like the move because I love players to play entire careers for one team. (Doesn’t happen that often) Hisashi Iwakuma will have a second full season in Seattle as the number two and seems to be the only other starter locked in besides Joe Saunders who signed recently to be their third starter. The final two spots maybe filled with Blake Beavan, Erasmo Ramirez or Hector Noesi, all of which have major league experience. Keep a close eye on prospect Danny Hultzen or Taijuan Walker who I feel will soon join King Felix as a strong top three.

Catcher: Jesus Montero will need to be the man behind the plate this year. Some are worried about his defense behind the plate but with all the depth they acquired in the off-season he will need to primarily stay at catcher. Veterans Kelly Shoppach and Ronny Paulino will serve as backups with defensive specialties to help Montero.

Infield: A core group of young talent returns in Dustin Ackley at second, Justin Smoak at first, and Kyle Seager at third. Ackley and Smoak each had strong rookie seasons only to have a set back last year. The M’s traded for Kendrys Morales in order to push Smoak. He will also serve as primary DH but Michael Morse is also new and can play first and DH. If Smoak doesn’t produce look for Morales to take over first and Morse move to DH as there is a lot of depth in the outfield. Brendan Ryan also returns at shortstop and has great defense but if he doesn’t improve his hitting Roberto Andino may over take SS. Prospect Alex Liddi also has his eye on third base. A lot of competition and depth may cause this group to play better as a whole.

Outfield: As I stated Michael Morse will be in left with Franklin Gutierrez in center, and Michael Saunders in right. Veterans Jason Bay and Raul Ibanez both signed FA contracts. Eventually I see Morse going to DH when Smoak continues to under perform and Bay and Ibanez to platoon in left. Eric Thames, Casper Wells, and Mike Carp all seem to be odd men out this year with all the newly acquired depth.

Bullpen: Tom Wihelmsen won the closer job last year and looks to build upon that position. Stephen Pryor and Charlie Furbush will be the righty/lefty setup that have become so very popular in MLB. Oliver Perez also adds good lefty ability in the pen. He can also eat innings when needed.

5) Houston Astros – I’m excited for the Astros. Not because they will be good but new jerseys, new manager, new division, and adding a DH. Other than that these young players will need to focus on individual performances in order to show the organization they need to stay in place.
Rotation: Bud Norris, Lucas Harrell and Jordan Lyles look to be locks for three rotation spots with Harrell emerging as the staff ace. Phil Humber and Erik Bedard look to have the edge in getting the last two spots but Alex White, Brad Peacock, and John Ely will be serious threats that could emerge this year. Those who don’t make the rotation could become key pieces in a rebuilt bullpen

Catcher: Jason Castro is a very good defensive catcher who’s bat seems to get better every year. He knows how to work with a pitching staff and seems committed to getting better. I’m not sure who will be his backup but their website list Carlos Corporan as the backup. Non-roster invitee Jason Jaramillo who spent time with the Pirates could also win the job.

Infield: Jose Altuve is the real talent in this group. I feel he is the teams best overall player as he plays a great second base. Brett Wallace will start at first base with Carlos Pena serving as the clubs first full time DH. In the end I see Chris Carter taking over DH and Pena playing first. Matt Dominguez showed real promise last year at third and looks to hold that position for some time. Tyler Greene steps into the shortstop position after Jed Lowrie was traded to Oakland. Nate Freiman was a rule 5 draft pick and looks to either contribute at first and DH or be returned to the Padres.

Outfield: The only sure thing is that Justin Maxwell will start somewhere. The Astros also signed veteran Rick Ankiel to add depth to the outfield but I think he is more valuable as a bench player and pitch hitter. Chris Carter will more than likely start in left but as I said he will likely end up at DH. J.D. Martinez, Fernando Martinez and Brandon Barnes all look to find a roster spot and even potentially a spot in the starting line up. If I had to guess it would be J.D. Martinez getting the nod.

Bullpen: It seems they are going to go with Jose Veras as the closer come opening day. Westley Wright is the always valuable lefty arm. Other than that I’m not really sure who will fill out the bullpen. Josh Fields looks to be a major contributor along with Xavier Cedeno, Rhiner Cruz, and Chia-Jen Lo. All of which are competing in the WBC.

This division is deep with talent and the top three teams seem primed for playoff berths. The only problem is that only one or two of the three will get in. I think the A’s can reproduce last season and the Angels offense carrying them to the playoffs.
